A chalazion is a chronic inflammation of the meibomian glands located in the eyelid margin, caused by sebum accumulation. It presents as a swollen bump on the eyelid (similar to a nodule), initially painless, but may lead to redness and swelling. In severe cases, it can blur vision.
It is more common in people with:
– Blepharitis,
– Recurrent styes,
– Acne rosacea,
– Seborrheic dermatitis,
– Diabetes,
– Other systemic conditions
Prevention includes a diet rich in omega-3s, proper eyelid hygiene, and regular ophthalmologic follow-up in at-risk individuals.
Treatment is usually effective with medication in acute forms. For recurrent or persistent cases, minimally invasive surgical removal may be recommended.
