Another surgical technique is pars plana vitrectomy, which involves removing the vitreous gel. During the procedure, once the vitreous is removed and the retinal tears are identified, they are treated with laser or cryotherapy. A bubble of air, gas, or silicone oil is then injected into the eye. This bubble helps keep the retina in place until the subretinal fluid is fully reabsorbed. If silicone oil is used, a second procedure is necessary months later to remove it. If air or gas is used, the patient must avoid air travel, high altitudes, or scuba diving, as pressure changes can cause gas expansion and dangerous intraocular pressure elevation.
